Summer Vacation and My Chair

Monday, January 21st, 2008

So my family (extended family - read crazy uncles and cousins and all) wants to go camping this summer. They’ve made a reservation at a developed campground. They’ve reassured me that it’s wheelchair friendly.

But I just don’t know. Does anyone have experience trying to get around a campsite in a wheelchair? I know I’m probably being a baby here. I’m certainly not the first person to try to figure this out. But I just don’t know if it’s worth the aggravation to haul all my “stuff” out into the wilderness. And then basically be stuck because there’s only so far I can get around.

Great News: A Terrific Wheelchair-Friendly Vacation Spot

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Imagine watching the sunset over gorgeous white sands and sparkling emerald waters. Imagine relaxing in your beach chair or looking out from your panoramic balcony. And imagine that you’re staying in a resort that’s not just wheelchair accessible, but truly wheelchair friendly.

We wanted to send you this quick post to make aware of just such a resort. It is the Splash beachfront condos in Panama City Beach, Florida. There are many wheelchair-friendly units to choose from. The elegant tile floors, which stretch from the entry through the living room and into the kitchen, make rolling through the living space easy. The kitchen area is fully accessible and features lowered counter tops.

The roll-in shower is awesome. Not only is it so easy to access, it’s also great for herding the kids into to wash off the sand. Spacious, smart, and well-designed. You’ll love it.

All condo units feature new furnishings and have beach views. Some of the fun aspects include a terrific lazy river pool and water park for the kids or grandkids, drive-in movies, a workout room, and a game room. Of course, two regular pools offer plenty of relaxation and lounging.

The spacious condos feature two bedrooms, a bunk-bed area, two bathrooms, high-speed internet, outdoor bbq, AC, and full furnishings. So you’ll be plenty comfortable as you venture out into a wide variety of nearby attractions.

Here’s a link where you can find more information. Best of luck planning your next getaway.

I Think My Physical Therapist Hates Me

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

So tell me if any of you have had similar experiences. I go into my physical therapy appointment and meet my therapist. He’s a handsome, middle-aged man with a friendly smile. He bends down, places his hand on my wheelchair, and explains what we’ll be doing to help my shoulder recover from surgery. Everything sounds so great and he has such a kind way of explaining things that I feel reassured and I’m actually excited.

Then the handsome, friendly man straps me into a machine that makes medieval torture devices look like a child’s playground. The next thing I know, my shoulder is being stretched and pulled in positions I’m sure aren’t natural. As I’m sweating profusely, I look up and the handsome physical therapist is smiling at me—like he’s enjoying this. So has anyone else had this experience? (In all seriousness, he’s a nice guy but he’s killing me!)
