My Battle with City Hall
Saturday, November 3rd, 2007So I live in kind of a small town. People here are great and I love my neighbors. In fact, they are so friendly and are always checking on me because I live alone. I like to take my power wheelchair around the neighborhood in the evenings. Everyone say “hi” and asks me how I’m doing.
But the other day, I had a question about my utility bill. I had to go into the city offices. Of course, the building is compliant with wheelchair ramps and automatic doors. But when I went up to the counter to ask my question, the counter was really high and deep. This meant that it was incredibly awkward to try to have a conversation with the lady. She tried to show me a few things on her computer screen and it was simply impossible for me to stretch my neck up to see it. She was so nice and I knew she felt bad. But how hard would it be to have one counter that was set up to serve citizens in wheelchairs?
