Tuesday, January 29th, 2008Life is so different now. I had a good job. I worked hard every day. My family didn’t have much, but we had enough.
But it all changed the day I fell and shattered my L4 and L5 lumbar vertebrae. And the day a wheelchair became a permanent part of my future. It was bad enough trying to deal with the pain, the emotions, the changes to my home. But then I had to face the reality that I would never be able to return to my job.
I felt like calling the social worker was admitting defeat. But I finally called. She helped me find a state program to help pay for schooling to help rehabilitate the disabled. It has been agonizing to try to decide what I want to study. I’ve always been better building and making things than talking and thinking about stuff.
But here I am applying to college. My brother-in-law thinks I should study sales and marketing. But I HATE salesmen. No way am I gonna be that kind of guy. I’ve always liked to sketch and draw. My wife is always getting after me for doodling on papers she needs to save. So I found that the local community college offers a graphic design program. My kids told me that they’ll help me figure out the computer stuff. So I’m gonna start the graphic design program. My first class starts at the end of April. Honestly, I’m scared to death. But I can’t sit at home forever.
