It was only seven years ago when my brother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. We were all shocked. He was only 40 years old. He had been so healthy and was enjoying a successful career. We, of course, heard plenty of stories about many people who have MS and lead fairly normal, long lives.

But for my brother, it was not to be. His MS has been so aggressive. It has robbed him of so many things in such a short time. We watched the rapid descent from needing a cane, to a walker, to a wheelchair. Each step seemed to take a little more of his freedom, a little more of his vitality.

Then when even the wheelchair wasn’t providing the mobility he needed, we began our search for an electric mobility scooter or power wheelchair. It seemed like another step down in the loss of his freedom. But we were never so happy to be wrong.

Though nothing can compensate for all that my brother has lost, the newfound independence he has gained with a Pride power wheelchair is a godsend. Just as important as the ability to do things for himself again is all that it has done for his mental health. He has more hope and his sense of humor has even returned. In many ways, it has been like getting my brother back.

So how do you all feel today? How’s your health? Do you feel good? When was the last time that you honestly felt really good?

If you’re like me, it’s been a while. My shoulder hurts. My knees hurt. I have this constant ringing in my ears. I have to take pills for my high blood pressure. I have to eat high fiber foods plus take a fiber pill to make me so I don’t feel like I’m going to explode every day. I’m losing my hair. And today my neck feels like I fell asleep doing a headstand.

How come nobody told us that health would be our number one concern when we reached the golden years? My employer must have had a “Retirement Planning” session six times a year. And it was all about money. Where were the classes about being kind to your knees?
